Turning a Brilliant Manuscript into a Marketable Author Brand
When molecular geneticist Sara Winokur came to Black Château, she had a compelling manuscript and ambitious goals for her debut mystery novel. What she did not yet have was the author platform that captured her unique brand, a book cover, logo, or public awareness needed to support her launch in a competitive market.
Her novel, “Double Blind: The Icelandic Manuscript Murders,” is an international crime thriller set in Iceland. Its combination of forensic mystery, Nordic atmosphere, and international intrigue offered a distinctive foundation for Sara’s author brand and book marketing campaign.
Black Château developed a coordinated strategy that transformed Sara’s manuscript into a professionally produced book, introduced her to readers and members of the media, and drove traffic to the book’s Amazon page during its launch.
Creating an Author Brand from the Ground Up
Sara is a molecular geneticist, world traveler, forensic mystery enthusiast, and longtime admirer of Iceland. These interests were not merely biographical details. They became the foundation of an author brand that could connect with readers, journalists, podcast hosts, and event organizers.
Black Château identified the parts of Sara’s professional experience and personal story that would be most relevant to her target audience. Her ideal readers included fans of mysteries and thrillers, Icelandic and Nordic noir fiction, European travel, and stories informed by science.
The author’s integrated marketing strategy included:
- Brand positioning and public persona
- Author biography and media talking points
- Professional headshots
- Brand colors and visual direction
- A signature logo
- A tagline and brand promise
- Website strategy and design
- Social media and email marketing
- Content development
Each element was designed to reinforce a consistent message: Sara Winokur brings scientific knowledge, international curiosity, and a genuine passion for Iceland to the world of crime fiction.
Professional Photo Shoot and Headshot Creation
Sara did a photoshoot with the team wearing a variety of outfits, posed in various ways, and later edited to match her brand’s look and feel.
The photography was used on Sara’s website, media materials, social media and her email marketing.
Designing an Author Website for Readers and Search Engines
Sara’s existing website was redesigned to create a more modern, intuitive, and visually distinctive experience. The new website made it easier for visitors to learn about Sara, explore her book, and understand the experiences that inspired her writing.
Black Château incorporated Sara’s author branding throughout the design, including a custom signature logo and imagery connected to Iceland and the themes of “Double Blind.” the log in the upper left corner is animated to look like a DNA double helix breaking a part, and forming her signature. A unique feature that captures her brand identity.
The hero video, which sets the tone for her website, captures an array of Sara’s brand elements, inviting people to explore more. It is equal parts inviting and mood-setting, giving visitors a feel for what they can expect in Sara’s writing.
The new website was also developed with search engine optimization in mind. Its organization, content, and visual presentation supported both discoverability and usability.
The redesigned website united Sara’s scientific background, international interests, and fiction writing within one cohesive author platform. It still performs today as an entry for people discovering her world of books, as well as her blog and other information about her many travels.
From Manuscript to Finished Book
A successful book launch begins with a professional product. Black Château guided “Double Blind” from manuscript to finished book by developing its cover, interior design, and sales description.
Several book cover concepts were created and refined before the final design was selected. The cover needed to clearly communicate the novel’s thriller genre while remaining original and memorable.
The final artwork incorporated a DNA spiral into the trunk of a tree, creating a visual connection between Sara’s scientific background and the novel’s story. The design also established an element that could be carried throughout her broader author brand.
The book’s interior was designed with a clean, elegant appearance that complemented the cover and supported a comfortable reading experience.
Writing a Book Description Without Giving Away the Mystery
A book description must capture attention quickly, establish the genre, and give readers a reason to continue to the purchase button.
The philosophy behind the reader’s experience, going from the front cover, to the back where they read the description, and then to the first chapter, is part of the Reader UX. Black Château strategized this path while integrating each aspect of the book to lure in the reader. Learn more about the concept here: You Can Lead a Horse to a Book, but You Can’t Make Him Read.
For “Double Blind,” Black Château centered the description on the main character and the story elements most likely to appeal to readers of international mysteries and Nordic thrillers. The copy communicated the novel’s atmosphere, stakes, and central mystery without revealing important plot developments.
The description was written to help potential readers understand what made the book distinctive while remaining appropriate for online retailers, media materials, and promotional campaigns.
Building Momentum with Preorders, Advance Reading Copies and Reviews
“Double Blind” was submitted for a Kirkus review several months prior to launch. It was placed on preorder on December 27, 2019, approximately three months before its March 31, 2020, release.
This preorder period and ample timeline gave Black Château time to begin building awareness, collecting reviews, and directing readers to the book’s Amazon page before launch day.
Advance reading copies were made available using the Black Château three-prong approach which includes NetGalley, our proprietary database of book bloggers and reviewers, and collaboration with book influencers and third parties who post on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok’s “BookTok.”
The overall results were hundreds of reviews that spanned from before the book’s launch to long after its release.
Highlights include:
- 21 Advanced reviews published to NetGalley
- 162 clicks to read prior to launch
- 420+ Amazon reviews after launch
- 350+ Goodreads ratings after launch
- 100+ social media reviews and posts
Alerting the Media to the Book Launch with a Press Release
Black Château wrote and distributed an SEO-focused press release announcing the publication of “Double Blind.” It was sent over a reputable wire service, sent to our proprietary press lists, and posted on the Black Château website’s press room page.
The release was distributed to approximately 300 websites and shared with Black Château’s database of approximately 20,000 contacts.
This additional exposure supported the larger public relations campaign while strengthening the book’s online visibility during its release period.
The press release was used to drive media awareness and during media pitching. It helped secure interviews and articles where Sara discussed her book, genetics, and even travels to Iceland where she received a pair of mittens from the then First Lady of Iceland.
Other media materials were also prepared, including Sara’s media talking points which she practiced prior to her first interviews, her media pitch, author bio, and headshots were all curated for press.
The press release included links to Sara’s website and Amazon book page, helping readers and members of the media move directly from the announcement to additional information about the author and book.
Driving Readers to Amazon with a Three-Day Advertising “Boost” Campaign
“Double Blind” was released on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Beginning on launch day, Black Château ran a three-day advertising campaign designed to drive potential readers to the book’s Amazon page and generate consistent sales.
The digital edition remained at its preorder price of $2.99 during the promotional period. Maintaining the discounted price gave readers a clear incentive to purchase the book while the advertising and media campaigns were generating attention.
The campaign was designed to concentrate traffic and sales within a limited period, supporting the book’s visibility within relevant Amazon categories.
Strong Amazon Rankings for a Debut International Thriller
“Double Blind” generated steady paperback and digital sales throughout the preorder and launch periods. This sales activity helped the book achieve strong rankings in several competitive Amazon categories including International Mystery and Crime and Mystery, Thriller and Suspense Literary Fiction.
It was also promoted through various sites such as Bargain Booksy and The Fussy Librarian. Other promotions kept generating sales long after the launch to encourage algorithms on Amazon and other platforms to “serve” the book to potential readers interested in the genre and categories the book fell under.
A Coordinated Book Launch Builds Sales, Reputation and Brand Recognition
Sara came to Black Château with a manuscript. She left the launch process with a finished book, a recognizable author brand, a professional website, media coverage, reader reviews, and a platform she could continue to use throughout her writing career.
The success of “Double Blind” was not based on one interview, advertisement, or design element. It came from building the right foundation and coordinating each part of the campaign around Sara’s goals, expertise, book, and target audience.
For debut authors, the publication date is only one moment in a much larger process. Building the author brand and reader audience before the book is released helps create momentum that can continue well beyond launch day.
